Add a little salt!
Holy-Guacamole! I love to add a little salt to the top of my guacamole. It just gives it that little extra flavor that pairs magnificently with the tortilla chips. They have enough salt on their own, but I like just a bit more to compliment the jalapeno and avacado.
We think of being salty as an expression of being feisty or anger. A conversation with a friend rubs you the wrong way, and you’re salty. A disagreement with a daughter about what is appropriate or inappropriate to where to school ends with you feeling frustrated that you are even having this disagreement, and you’re salty. Perhaps you can relate to a father who is very distant and seems to resurface time and time again after years of no communication, and you’re salty.
But salt is also a good spice that adds flavor. Can we just picture salt as the way Jesus put it. An adult night out with friends. A text received after a long, exhausting, draining day from your husband. Perhaps a good laugh shared with your mother while using various filters that are childish, but hilarious.
In Matthew 5:13 Jesus said “You are the salt of the earth.” He went on to explain, “…what good is salt if it has lost its flavor?” If we have lost our verve and our way of being audacious in loving Christ, then how will we “…shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise (y)our heavenly Father.”
I want to be salty, but for Jesus so that others may see Him shine out through me.
